What is homeostasis?
the maintenance of a stable internal environment in the body
Name the 3 internal conditions that need to be controlled through homeostasis
Blood glucose concentration
Body temperature
Water levels
What are the 3 components of automatic control systems?
Receptors - cells that detect stimuli
Coordination centres - process information received from receptors
Effectors - bring about responses to bring the conditions in the body back to optimum levels
What is a receptor?
Cells which detect stimuli/ a change in the environment
What is an effector?
A muscle or gland that will bring about a response
What are the two types of effectors?
Muscles
Glands
What are the two parts of CNS?
Brain
Spinal cord
What is the role of each neurone:
Sensory neurone
Motor neurone
Relay neurone
Carry impulses from receptors to the CNS
Carry impulses from the CNS to effectors
Connect sensory and motor neurones inside the CNS
What is the order of information flow for a reaction to a stimulus?
Stimulus โ receptor โ sensory neurone โ CNS โ motor neurone โ effector โ response
Write the order of a reflex arc
stimulus โ receptor โ sensory neurone โ relay neurone โ motor neurone โ effector โ response
What are some examples of reflexes?
Blinking
Breathing
Sneezing
What happens at a synapse?
Electrical impulses reaches the end of the neurone
This causes the release of a chemical neurotransmitter which diffuses across the gap
This triggers a new electrical impulse on the next neurone
