Cell Cycle
The process of cell division consisting of two main processes - Interphase and Mitosis/Cytokinesis.
Interphase
The resting phase of a cell where it prepares for division.
Mitosis
The process of a cell splitting into two daughter cells, ensuring genetic continuity.
G0 Phase
The resting phase of a cell where it is not growing.
G1 Phase
Checkpoint 1 of Interphase where the cell prepares for division by doubling in size and the centrosome doubles.
S Phase
The phase of Interphase where DNA replicates and chromosomes replicate to form chromatids.
G2 Phase
Checkpoint 2 of Interphase where it checks if DNA was copied properly.
Prophase
The first stage of Mitosis where centrosomes move to opposite sides of the cell, chromatids join at the centromere, nucleus disappears, and spindle fibers attach to chromatids.
Metaphase
The second stage of Mitosis where sister chromatids line up along the metaphase plate and are held perpendicular to the microtubules.
Anaphase
The third stage of Mitosis where sister chromatids are pulled towards the centrosomes as the spindle fibers shorten.
Telophase
The fourth stage of Mitosis where spindle fibers disappear, nucleus reforms, chromatids uncoil into chromatin, and cytoplasm pinches at the equator creating a furrow.
Cytokinesis
The final stage of cell division where the cell splits into two daughter cells and the cytoplasm and organelles are evenly distributed.
