• Situational Irony, and unexpected, paradoxical, or perverse turn of events

The Storm (1898)

• immediately introduces us to the region with the child’s dialect

• it’s also present in certain terms the author uses like “piped” as spoke

• the storm is the mood, sinister

• using words like “beat in” and “driving” sheets of rain, it conveys the danger and intensity of the storm.

-plus lots of interesting use of terms like the storm invading, which parallels this invasion of her home and the tension there

• calixta and alcee have a prior relationship? there is tension

-oh i see, she is acting afraid of the storm, but really she is afraid of this man in her house? because of their past entanglement ?

• some dialog i can’t even understand !

• the storm creates a type of special circumstance, within which this story occurs

• oh EW, because she’s no longer a virgin he thinks he can have sex with her !

• this dialog around desire is so impenetrable lol

• very well done foreshadowing, because from that first sentence you know that something will occur between them

• she has no guilt! wow!

• the interesting tension between bibi and bobinot worried about being dirty in the storm, meanwhile calixta is hiding a very different secret

-she is worried about her cheating, and so does not get mad at them for being unsafe in the storm

• everybody in this story is lying, is that the irony? alcee lies to his wife, claiming to be for her care but really wanting to stay for calixta

• in this story everyone thinks everyone else will be upset at their infraction, but actually those people want that too ! that is the situational irony !

oh!!! fantastic story with a twist

• the joys of a woman freed from marriage, and the horror at finding this life she dreamed of ruined

• so she dies

• the irony is her being happy when everyone thinks she will be sad?

• i love the way she uses language she change the mood, she sinks into the chair with an exhaustion, and then notices the treats with spring life. so good
