McCulloch v. Maryland (1819)
ruled that Congress had the power to create a national bank and that states could not tax federal property
Gibbons v. Ogden (1824)
affirmed the exclusive power of Congress/the national government to regulate interstate trade
Thirteenth Amendment
(1865) outlawed slavery
Fourteenth Amendment
(1868) limits state actions by preventing states from denying people due process and citizenship, and requires that all people be treated equally under the law
Fifteenth Amendment
(1870) prohibits states from denying people voting rights based on their race, previous history of servitude, or any other discriminatory practice

selective incorporation
the process by which SCOTUS applies rights from the Bill of Rights to the states on a case-by-case basis; SCOTUS affirmed that almost all rights in the Bill of Rights apply to state governments
cooperative federalism
state and national governments, though they have their own separate spheres of influence, also have areas that they cooperate/work together on
