constant
A constant in math is a value, number, or term that never changes and stays fixed within a specific problem or equation
decreasing
In math, decrease means to make a value, amount, size, or quantity smaller than it was before
dependant variable
A dependent variable is a value that changes in response to another value (the independent variable)
domain
the domain is all the values that go into a function and the range is all the values that come out.
graph
a graph is a mathematical structure used to model relationships between objects.
function
A function in math is a special rule or relationship that pairs each input value with one and only one output value
function notation
Function notation is a standardized way to write equations by replacing the dependent variable y with an expression like f x to clearly show the function's name and its input variable.
horizontal
horizontal means running straight across from left to right, parallel to the horizon
increasing
In math, an increase means to make a value, number, or quantity larger, greater, or higher
dependant variable
A decreasing variable usually refers to a decreasing function, where the output value y or f x gets smaller as the input value x becomes larger
input
n independent variable is an input value in a math equation or function that you can choose or control freely, and its value does not depend on any other variable
linear
In mathematics, linear generally means related to a straight line or having a first-degree polynomial (where variables have an exponent of 1).
mapping
In mathematics, a mapping (or map) is a rule or process that assigns each element in one set (the domain) to a specific element in another set (the codomain)
maximum
a maximum is the greatest value of a set, function, or variable
minimum
a minimum is the smallest value in a set of numbers or the lowest point on the graph of a function
non-linear
nonlinear means that the relationship between an input and an output is not proportional, and the graph of the equation forms a curve instead of a straight line
ordered pair
An ordered pair is a pair of mathematical objects written in a specific, fixed order and enclosed in parentheses, typically written as (x, y)
origin
the origin is the fixed reference point or starting position used to measure and plot coordinates on a graph, number line, or space
output
An output in mathematics is the final value or result you get after applying a function, rule, or operation to an Input Definition In Math
quadrant 1
the top-right section of a Cartesian coordinate plane, where both the x-coordinate and the y-coordinate are positive
quadrant 2
upper-left region of a Cartesian coordinate plane, formed where the horizontal \(x\)-axis and vertical \(y\)-axis intersect
quadrant 3
the bottom-left section of a Cartesian coordinate plane
quadrant 4
the bottom-right section of a Cartesian coordinate plane, formed where the positive horizontal x-axis and the negative vertical y-axis intersect.
range
range means two different things depending on whether you are studying statistics or algebra (functions)
rate of change
The rate of change in math measures how one quantity changes in relation to another. It describes how fast a dependent variable y changes when an independent variable x changes
relation
The rate of change in math measures how one quantity changes in relation to another. It describes how fast a dependent variable y changes when an independent variable x changes
slope
In math, slope is a number that measures the steepness and direction of a straight line.
slope intercept
The slope-intercept form is a way to write the equation of a straight line
vertical
vertical means straight up and down, running perpendicular (at a 90-degree angle) to a horizontal line or the horizon
vertical line test
The vertical line test is a visual method in mathematics used to determine if a graph represents a function.
x-axis
The x-axis is the horizontal number line on a Cartesian coordinate plane that runs left and right through the origin
x-coordinate
The x-coordinate is the first number in an ordered pair (x, y) that shows the horizontal position of a point on a coordinate plane
x-intercept
An x-intercept is the point where a line or curve crosses the horizontal x-axis on a graph
y-axis
The y-axis is the vertical number line on a Cartesian coordinate plane
y-coordinate
A y-coordinate is the second number in an ordered pair \((x, y)\) that tells you the vertical position or distance of a point from the x-axis on a coordinate plane.
y-intercept
The y-intercept is the point where a graph crosses the vertical y-axis
