what is your immune system
A complete network of cells and proteins that defend body from pathogens
what are pathogens
A foreign substance that attacks body like bacteria, virus, fungi, chemicals
What does your bone marrow do
Primary cite for different blood type productions including white blood cell and the maturation of the T/B cells
Thymus gland
Trains and differenciates T/B cells
Lymph nodes
Filters lymph fluid, stores T/B cells
Spleen
Filters blood borne pathogens and recycles old blood cells and destroys bacteria with the help of macrophages
What do they do:
-Neutrophils:
-Lymphocytes:
-Macrophages&monocytes:
-first responder to engulf bacteria
-target specific cells to produce antibodies
-large cells to destroy bacteria
First line of defense
Mucus, skin, saliva, tears, stomach acid, good gut bacteria
Second line of defense
Macrophages that target all invaders(not target specific)
Third line of defense
T and B cells that target certain types of antigens and have specific antibodies to fight them off (target specific)
How does T and B cells play an important role in combating antigens
If a pathogen returns into the body, the T and B cells have memories of it, so they recognize it quickly, multiply and form specific antibodies to help fight off pathogens
What is an antigen
A substance that the body recognizes at foreign (when there’s a marker on the pathogen)
What is an antibody
Proteins that fight off antigens
