Muscle tissue
Contractile tissue whose elongated cells or muscle fibers can shorten and thicken to pull attached ends and move body parts.
Skeletal muscle tissue
Muscle tissue made of single, cylindrical, multinucleate muscle fibers with striations caused by myofibril filament arrangement in the sarcoplasm.
Cardiac muscle tissue
Striated muscle tissue found only in the heart, consisting of single-nucleus fibers arranged in a branching system and connected by intercalated disks.
Smooth muscle tissue
Non-striated muscle tissue made of single elongated fibers with a single nucleus, found in organ linings, hollow vessels, and the iris of the eye.
Intercalated disk
A specialized structure connecting cardiac muscle fibers together that rapidly transmits muscle impulses to the next fiber.
Sarcoplasm
The cytoplasm of a muscle fiber containing myofibril filaments.
Multinucleate
Possessing many nuclei within a single muscle cell, as seen in skeletal muscle fibers.
Cranial aponeurosis
A muscle covering structure located on the head.
Epicranius
A muscle of the head that consists of the frontalis and occipitalis.
Frontalis
A head muscle that is a component of the epicranius.
Occipitalis
A head muscle that is a component of the epicranius.
Temporalis
A muscle of the head.
Orbicularis oculi
A muscle of the head located surrounding the eye.
Orbicularis oris
A muscle of the head located surrounding the mouth.
