Vocabulary terms and definitions covering metal properties, bonding, extraction, and metal groups on the periodic table.
Corrosion
The gradual wearing away of a metal as a result of a chemical reaction in which the metal is changed into a metallic compound (such as rusting).
Ductility
A substance's ability to be drawn or pulled into the form of a wire (such as copper or gold).
Malleability
A substance's ability to be flattened into thin sheets by hammering or by the application of intense pressure (such as aluminum).
Metallic bond
The force of attraction between the metals and the surrounding sea of electrons in the metal.
Ore
A naturally occurring rock from which a useful metal or mineral is recovered.
Reduction
The process of converting an ore into a free, uncombined metal.
Alkali metal
Elements in group one a on the periodic table (except for hydrogen) that are the most reactive metals, have a low melting point, and have a high degree of luster.
Alkaline earth metals
The elements in group 2 on the periodic table that are malleable, ductile, good conductors of electricity, and have gray and white luster, but quickly tarnish when exposed to air.
Transitional metal
Elements in groups starting with 111B through 11B (between groups 11A and 111A on the periodic table) that are highly versatile, hard-working, strong, malleable, ductile, lustrous, have high melting and boiling points, and are good conductors of heat and electricity.
