What is Priming? Describe an example of Priming influencing future behavior.

Priming is the effect in which recent experience of a stimulus facilitates or inhibits later processing of the same or a similar stimulus

  • Or, a psychological phenomena where exposure to one stimulus (the prime) unconsciously influences how a person responds to a subsequent stimulus (the target)

  • *This makes us more vulnerable to explotion

  • *Distributed throughout the 4 lobes, but can be seen in the Neocortex (outermost layer)

    • ex) Playing soft jazz music over loudspeakers in a transit system reduced rates of littering and vandalism because the audio primed a calm, relaxed state of mind
