Normal Approach to Landing: Chair Fly

1. Perform Descent Checklist, announce “Descent Checklist Complete.”

2. Descend at 90-100 KIAS to arrive at traffic pattern altitude 2-3 NM from airport (may be adjusted to meet local requirements).

3. Radio communications as appropriate.

4. If joining Traffic Pattern, follow procedure “Traffic Patterns”

5. Perform Before Landing or “CLGUMPS” checklist.

6. On downwind abeam touchdown area:

a. 1500-1700 RPM.

b. Flaps 10°.

c. Begin descent.

d. Airspeed 80 KIAS.

7. At approximately 45° from the approach end of the runway, turn base:

a. Flaps 20°.

b. Power as required, looking for 70 KIAS.

8. Turn Final:

a. Flaps 30°.

b. Power as required.

c. 60-70 KIAS (Use lower A/S in calm wind conditions and higher A/S in gusty/strong winds).

d. Trim for stabilized descent on normal approach path.

9. Maintain crosswind correction and directional control if crosswind is present.

10. 500’ AGL, call out “Runway ___ Identified, Runway ___ Cleared to Land.”

11. When the desired landing point is assured, ease the power to idle.

12. At approximately 10-20’ begin to round-out the airplane and look down the runway

13. As airspeed decreases, gradually increase AOA and pitch attitude while setting the landing attitude.

14. If crosswind is present, touchdown on the upwind main landing gear and use rudder to maintain directional control.

15. As airspeed decreases, increase ailerons until ultimately full aileron is applied into the crosswind.

16. Upon touchdown, maintain back pressure as airplane decelerates. Do not let go of the yoke upon touchdown.

17. Continue rollout on centerline with crosswind correction applied.

18. When clear of ALL runways, perform After Landing Checklist, announce “After Landing Checklist Complete.”

Steep Turns: Chair Fly

Maintain 95 KIAS (~2200-2400 RPM).

Complete CHAPS Checklist

  1. Smoothly roll into a coordinated 45° bank. (When passing through 30°, apply an additional ~100 RPM to maintain airspeed and apply back pressure.)

  2. 2 swipes of trim down

  3. Maintain back pressure to maintain altitude.

  4. ~20° from visual reference point/heading, transition to the other side.

  5. During transition to the other side, visually clear and verbally state, “Clear left/right.”

  6. 20° from visual reference point/heading, smoothly roll wings level.

  7. Relieve back pressure to prevent climb. (If using trim, forward pressure may be required.)

  8. Reduce power to ~2200-2400 RPM.

  9. Complete Cruise Checklist, announce “Cruise Checklist Complete.”

Slow Flight: Chair Fly

  1. CHAPS

  2. Entry: Power ~1500-1700 RPM. Maintain altitude, with back elevator pressure.

  3. Airspeed below 110 KIAS, “Speed Check” Flaps - 10° (Watch for balloon).

  4. Airspeed below 85 KIAS, “Speed Check” Flaps - 20°.

  5. Wait ~2 seconds, Flaps - 30°.

  6. Airspeed below 60 KIAS ~1900 RPM (Increase right rudder pressure to maintain heading).

  7. Adjust Pitch for airspeed as specified by evaluator (~55 KIAS) and trim.

  8. Adjust Power for altitude.

  9. Maintain heading and coordination with small bank/rudder corrections.

Maneuvering:

a. Coordinated turns using no more than 20° bank. (Recommend Standard Rate Turns).

b. Full power to climb.

c. 1500-1700 RPM to descend

Recovery:

a. Set cruise power (2400-2500 RPM).

b. Set 20° flaps.

c. Retract remaining flaps in 10° increments. (60KIAS Flaps 10°, 65 KIAS Flaps 0°).

d. Trim

Complete Cruise Checklist, announce “Cruise Checklist Complete.”

Power-OFF Stall: Chair Fly

  1. CHAPS

Entry:

a. Power ~1500-1700 RPM.

b. Maintain altitude, with back elevator pressure.

c. Airspeed below 110 KIAS, “Speed Check” Flaps - 10° (Watch for balloon).

d. Airspeed below 85 KIAS, “Speed Check” Flaps - 20°.

e. Wait ~2 seconds, Flaps - 30°.

f. Enter a momentary approach-to-land attitude (65 KIAS).

g. Reduce power to idle.

h. Establish and hold a pitch attitude that will result in a stall (Apply back pressure to maintain

altitude).

i. Use rudder to maintain coordination (The use of ailerons should be avoided once stalled).

Recovery:

a. Reduce AOA – Only enough to break stall.

b. Throttle Control – Full (push full in).

c. Wing Flaps - Retract to 20° (Immediately).

d. Climb Speed 60 KIAS and verify positive rate of climb.

e. Wing Flaps - 10° (Until Obstacles are Cleared), then UP (after reaching a safe altitude and 65 KIAS).

f. Pitch for Vy (74 knots)

g. Climb to entry altitude (or altitude specified by evaluator).

h. Set cruise power (2400-2500 RPM).

i. Trim.

Complete Cruise Checklist, announce “Cruise Checklist Complete.”

    b. Maintain altitude, with back elevator pressure.

    c. Decelerate to ~55 KIAS.

    d. Establish and hold a pitch attitude that will result in a stall. (~ 20° nose up).

    e. Simultaneously Power – Full (Increase right rudder pressure).

    f. Use rudder to maintain coordination (The use of ailerons should be avoided once stalled).

    Recovery:
