Vocabulary flashcards covering the components, functions, and temperature thresholds of internal combustion engine cooling systems.
Cooling System
A vehicle system that removes excess heat from the engine, maintains a constant operating temperature, and increases the temperature of a cold engine as quickly as possible.
Necessity of Cooling
The requirement to cool the cylinders of internal combustion engines because the engine cannot convert all the heat energy released by combustion into useful work.
Liquid Cooling
A method employed in most IC engines in which water (coolant) is circulated around the cylinders to pick up heat and then dissipate it through a radiator.
Thermostat Valve
A valve fitted in the path of coolant circulation that remains closed to heat a cold engine quickly and opens between 71 and 82 degrees centigrade to send water to the radiator.
Radiator
A component that dissipates heat transferred from the water (coolant) circulated around the engine cylinders.
Thermostat Switch
A switch that operates the cooling fan to support the cooling process in the radiator when the temperature rises above 82 degrees.
