Genesis

The beginning. It describes the beginning of the universe. It is the first book in the Bible and it says that God created the world.

What are ‘books’ in the Bible?

Basically like chapters

What was the role of God the Father during creation

• God the Father was creating.

• The Bible says ‘God created the heavens and the earth.’.

What was the role of the Word during creation

• The Word was transcendent

• The Word was the medium with which the Father created the world

• The Bible says, ‘In the beginning was the word, through him all things were made.’.

What was the role of the Holy Spirit during creation

• The Holy Spirit was transcendent

• It was hovering over the waters of chaos, bringing order to the world.

• The Bible says ‘The spirit of God was hovering over the water.’.

How were humans made

They were made in ‘the image and likeliness of God’ so we were immortal. We did not look like God but had similar characteristics e.g. loving.

The 5 roles of humans

• Reproduction

• Stewardship

• Marriage/companionship

• Worship

• Dominion

Reproduction

Our religious obligation to procreate and have children to continue stewardship and pass the faith on too.

• ‘Be fruitful and increase in number.’

Stewardship

To look after/care for the world,

• ‘The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.’

Marriage/companionship

To find a partner to spend life with and begin our own families.

• ‘..a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.’

Worship

Our responsibility to worship God and follow his orders

• ‘..but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil...’

Dominion

To have power over something - humans have power over the world.

• ‘..so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals..’

How long did it take God to create the world

It took him 6 days.

He rested on the seventh.
