Definition of Physical Education
A planned educational process that uses movement and physical activity as a medium for developing physical fitness, movement competence, knowledge, attitudes, values, and behaviors necessary for an active and healthy life.
Physical Education
combines two important ideas: physical and education. “Physical” relates to the body, movement, health, and physical activity, while “education” refers to the systematic process of developing knowledge, skills, attitudes, values, and behaviors.
Physical Education is
education through movement and education about movement.
Education Through Movement
Students learn important life skills and values by participating in physical activities
movement
becomes a means of educating the whole person.
Education About Movement
Physical Education also enables learners to understand how the body moves and responds to physical activity.
Education About Movement
Students learn concepts related to fitness, exercise, movement, safety, health, training principles, sports, dance, and recreation.
Quality Physical Education
combines knowledge and actual participation
Physical Literacy
involves having the competence, confidence, knowledge, motivation, and understanding necessary to participate in physical activities throughout life
The Philippine Physical Education curriculum emphasizes movement competency
because it affects learners’ confidence, motivation, participation in physical activity, fitness, and overall health.
A physically literate person
does not simply know how to perform a particular sport. Rather, the person develops the ability and confidence to participate in different kinds of physical activities and understands why being physically active is important.
Physical Education seeks to develop individuals who
choose to remain physically active throughout their lives.
Physical Development
Physical activity helps develop movement skills and different components of physical fitness, including cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, balance, coordination, agility, and speed.
Cognitive Development
Physical Education involves thinking and problem-solving. Learners study rules, strategies, movement concepts, exercise principles, health information, and safety procedures.
Social Development
Many physical activities require interaction with other people. Games, dances, sports, and group exercises provide opportunities to practice communication, cooperation, leadership, responsibility, and respect.
Emotional and Personal Development
Physical Education can also promote self-confidence, self-discipline, perseverance, emotional regulation, resilience, and positive self-concept
Importance of Physical Education
Physical Education is important because it prepares students not merely to perform activities during their school years but to develop behaviors and attitudes that contribute to lifelong health and well-being.
The 1987 Philippine Constitution
It provides that the State shall promote Physical Education and encourage sports programs, league competitions, amateur sports, and training for international competitions for the development of a healthy and alert citizenry. It also directs educational institutions to undertake regular sports activities.
Republic Act No. 5708 — The Schools Physical Education and Sports Development Act of 1969
