CT Scan
creates cross sectional images of the brain using combined computer and x ray technology
shrows structure of the brain (any damage)
doesn’t show function of the brain
Pet Scan
patient is injected with radioactive glucose and these signals are detected in the brain regions where they are being metabolized
Records ongoing brain activity (thinking)
exposure to radiation could be harmful + less precise than an fMRI
EEG
electrodes are placed on the head and when those areas are active, the it will produce a graphical representation from each electrode
fMRI
Measures changes in blood flow in the brain
Provides a 3D image of the brain structures
Indicates which areas of the brain are ACTIVE when certainin thoughts or emotions occur
BOTH an anatomical and functional picture of the brain
More precise than a PET scan
Limitations: Brain areas activate for different reasons
