Eassy Question
How does water go from tap to tap?
1) Primary filtration
water is filtered through screens to remove large debris (Lake Erie)
2) coagulation
chemicals (alum)
added to the water to cause suspended solids to form clumps (flocs) that sink to the bottom of the tank
3) settling
water flows into large tanks, reminding solids sink to the bottom and are pumped out
4) second filtration
water is filtered again usually by very fine grained sand, charcoal (Brita water filter)
5) chlorination
chlorine is added to kill any remaining harmful organisms (0.5 or less we can drink)
6) aeration
air is forced through the water and bacteria are added they break down organic matter and remove bad smells
7) additional treatment
sometimes chemcicals are added to decrease the mineral content of water, fluoride may be added to prevent tooth decay
Steps in order
1) Primary Filtration
2) Coagulation
3) settling
4) 2nd Filtration
5) chlorination
6) aeration
7)additional treatment
