Pollination
transfer of pollen from anther to stigma
Fertilization
fusion of sperm/pollen with the egg in the ovary leads to zygote
seed dispersal
seed is formed and then moves away from the parent to reduce competition between the two
Self Pollination
fusion of male and female gamete from the same plant
Cross Pollination
from two different plants, pollen can spread from wind but is usually brought by a pollinator like a bee
Stamen
male plant reproductive system
Anther
pollen producing organ
Filament
stalk supports anther and makes it available to pollinators
Pistil
female reproductive portion
Stigma
sticky tip to catch pollen
Style
tube shaped structure that connects stigma to ovule
Ovule
structure containing female reproductive cell
Petal
modified leaves to attract pollinators
Sepal
outer cover protecting flower
Peduncle
stalk of flower
thylakoid surface area
allows for greater absorption of light
small space in thylakoid
allows for faster accumulation of proteins to create a concentration gradient
Thylakoids
flat membrane bound sacs that help with light absobtion
Stroma
Fluid similar to cytosol, Contains chemicals and enzymes needed for photosynthesis
Double Membrane
keeps the enzyme and working structures away from the rest of the cell
Chlorophyll a
~430 nm and ~670 nm
Chlorophyll b
~452 nm and ~640 nm
Limitations of Photosynthesis
temperature, concentration of CO2, availability of light
ATP and NADH
used in calvin cycle
O2
waste product
