Renal corpuscle
The initial blood-filtering unit of a nephron, consisting of the vascular glomerulus enveloped by Bowman's capsule.
Renal glomerulus
A capillary tuft inside the renal corpuscle whose walls constitute the distinct layers of the glomerular filtration barrier.
Bowman's capsule
The double-walled cup at the beginning of a nephron composed of an outer parietal layer and an inner visceral layer resting on glomerular capillaries.
Proximal convoluted tubule
The highly coiled initial portion of the renal tubular system that drains filtrate from Bowman's space and performs extensive reabsorption.
Loop of Henle
The U-shaped segment of a nephron extending into the renal medulla, situated between the proximal and distal convoluted tubules.
Distal convoluted tubule
A specialized coiled tubular segment of the nephron following the loop of Henle that empties into the collecting system.
Macula densa
A plaque of densely packed epithelial cells in the distal convoluted tubule adjacent to the vascular pole of the renal corpuscle.
Juxtaglomerular apparatus
A regulatory structure in the kidney composed of the macula densa and adjacent vascular cells that monitors fluid composition and modulates blood pressure and filtration.
Medullary rays
Histological striations extending from the base of renal pyramids outward through the renal cortex, alternating with cortical labyrinths.
Cortical labyrinths
Intervening areas of the renal cortex positioned between medullary rays, containing renal corpuscles and convoluted tubules.
Renal papilla
The pointed apex of a renal pyramid located in the inner zone of the renal medulla that projects into a minor calyx.
Tunica albuginea (testis)
The dense, thick fibrous capsule directly surrounding the testis that gives off septa dividing the organ into testicular lobules.
Tunica vaginalis
A serous membrane of peritoneal origin covering the anterior and lateral surfaces of the testis outside the tunica albuginea.
Seminiferous tubules
Coiled epithelial tubules within the testicular lobules lined by germinal epithelium where spermatogenesis occurs.
Spermatogenesis
The comprehensive biological process by which primordial male germ cells proliferate and mature into haploid spermatozoa.
Spermiogenesis
The structural and morphological transformation phase within spermatogenesis in which non-motile, round spermatids differentiate into flagellated spermatozoa.
Tubuli recti
Short, straight tubular segments lined by Sertoli cells that connect the convoluted seminiferous tubules to the rete testis.
Rete testis
An interconnected network of anastomosing channels in the mediastinum of the testis connecting the tubuli recti to the ductuli efferentes.
Ductuli efferentes
Convoluted channels that emerge from the rete testis, traverse the tunica albuginea, and empty into the ductulus epididymidis.
Bulbourethral glands
Paired exocrine glands located near the membranous urethra in males that secrete clear, lubricating pre-ejaculatory fluid.
Corpus luteum
A temporary endocrine structure that develops in the ovary from an ovulated follicle and secretes steroid hormones.
Corpus albicans
A pale, dense connective tissue scar formed in the ovary by the involution and fibrous regression of an unmaintained corpus luteum.
Atretic follicle
An ovarian follicle that undergoes physiological degeneration and involution without successfully releasing an ovum.
Infundibulum (oviduct)
The funnel-shaped, fimbriated ovarian end of the oviduct that opens into the peritoneal cavity to capture the ovulated oocyte.
Ampulla (oviduct)
The longest, relatively wide segment of the oviduct possessing an extensively folded mucosa, representing the usual site of fertilization.
Isthmus (oviduct)
The narrow, thick-walled segment of the oviduct with a well-developed muscularis that connects the ampulla to the intramural segment.
Intramural part (oviduct)
The terminal portion of the oviduct that traverses the muscular wall of the uterus to enter the uterine cavity.
Uterine cervix
The lower, cylindrical portion of the uterus that extends into the superior aspect of the vagina and contains specialized mucous-secreting glands.
