1/12
Vocabulary flashcards covering the concepts of energy, ATP structure and function, and photosynthesis from Chapter 8.1.
Solar panels
Devices that convert sunlight into electricity.
Artificial photosynthetic system
A system that converts energy from the sun into chemical fuel.
Carbon-neutral fuels
Fuels that do not produce carbon-based waste products.
Energy
The ability to do work.
Forms of energy
Different states in which energy exists, including light, heat, and electricity.
Chemical bonds
The bonds of certain compounds where living things store energy.
Adenine (in ATP)
The nitrogen-containing base that forms part of an ATP molecule (labeled X).
Ribose (in ATP)
The 5-carbon sugar found in the center of an ATP molecule (labeled Y).
Phosphate groups (in ATP)
A chain of three groups (labeled Z) attached to ribose that are key to storing and releasing energy in ATP.
ATP energy release
The process by which cells release energy by splitting off a phosphate group from ATP.
ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate)
A high-energy molecule that acts like a fully charged battery compared to ADP.
Glucose (energy storage)
A sugar molecule that stores 90 times more energy than is required to add a phosphate group to ADP.
Autotrophs
Organisms that can make their own food.
