Self Reflections
Opportunity for nurses to examine their own actions, motivations, and feelings
Stimulates and supports the development of creativity
To self-reflect you must first recognize your own internal biases or prejudices
Examine your own actions, motivations, and feelings...find support if struggling etc.
Ex. Pt is a criminal

Reflection is the thinking and feeling behaviors that are used to both create and clarify the meaning of an event
Subjective Experience
Stage 1 (“what” process of self reflection)
Willingness to be open and perform self-assessment.
Might discover what's comfortable vs uncomfortable.
Contemplate actions before entering the actual situation.
Focus on thoughts, beliefs, and feelings related to experiences
Stage 2 (“so what” process of self reflection)
Critical analysis and exploration of alternatives
Determination of strengths and areas for development
Thinking about the situation in the moment of self-awareness, existing knowledge, and previously learned knowledge
Stage 3 (“now what” process of self reflection)
Look at judgements
Commitment to change
Whether or not you would have the same actions in the future or not.

Self Awareness
The capacity to actively identify, process, and collect information about one’s internal mental state and public behaviors, including general physical appearance
Develops through examining one’s own behavior and through receiving feedback about that behavior
Johari Window = process where you can collect info abt yourself individually. Hidden area is unknown to others, open area is known to others, etc

Open area = known to self and known to others
Blind area = known to others, unknown to self (feedback is given here)
Hidden area = unknown to others, known to self (disclosure)
Unknown Area = unknown to other and unknown to self (self-discovery)
Perception
Refer to the sensory experiences of the nurse when giving care, such as what is seen, heard, smelled, and touched
Includes the capacities of the five senses and is the primary cognitive process by which an individual collects sensory data and clusters it into a pattern
Thoughts
Refer to the cognitive aspects of the way in which the nurse appraises the sensory information and makes decisions how to interact and deliver psychiatric nursing care
Feelings
Refer to the emotional aspects of giving care to patients.
Emotional Intelligence
a measurement of interpersonal phenomena and includes
Accurate conscious perception and monitoring of one’s own emotions
Modification of one’s emotions so that their expression is appropriate; managing one’s own anxiety and sustaining hope in the face of adversity
Accurate recognition of and response to emotions in others
Skill in negotiating close relationships with others
