First steps
-BSI on, is my scene safe?
-Check responsiveness
-Call additional EMS
-Check breathing and pulse at the same time (5-10 seconds)
“The patient is unresponsive, apneic and has a weak pulse of 60”
Open the airway
“The mouth is full of secretions and vomitus.”
-Prepare rigid suction catheter
-Turn on power to suction device/retrieve manual suction device
-Insert rigid suction catheter without suction
-Suction mouth and oropharynx
“The mouth and oropharynx are clear.”
-Open the airway
-Insert OPA
-”Does the patient have a gag reflex?”
“No gag reflex is present and the patient accepts the airway adjunct.”
Immediately ventilate twice with BVM.
“ventilation is being performed properly and without difficulty.”
-Recheck pulse 5-10 seconds
-Attach O2 to BVM at 15 L/min
-Deliver 1 breath every 5-6 seconds
“How would you know if you are delivering appropriate volumes with each ventilation?”
Watch for equal and adequate chest rise
