What is communication apprehension?

Communication apprehension is the term for social anxiety during different public speaking situations

Trait-like Communication Apprehension

Orientation or response: personality-type orientation

Context: occurs in a broad range of contexts

Resistant or fluctuating: resistant but not fixed

Example: apprehensive about all public speaking opportunities

Generalized context Communication Apprehension

Orientation: personality-type orientation

Context: occurs in a specific type of context

Resistant or fluctuating: fluctuates between contexts

Example: apprehensive about giving a speech in person but not online

Person-group Communication Apprehension

Orientation: situation-based response

Context: occurs with a specific individual/ group

Resistant or fluctuating: varies with different individuals/ groups

Example: apprehensive when speaking with peers but not with friends

Situational Communication Apprehension

Orientation: situation-based response

Context: occurs with a specific individual/ group at a specific time

Resistant or fluctuating: situation-dependent

Example: apprehensive when speaking to the teacher during class but not after
