Mahavira

24th Tirthankara, considered by some to be founder

Tirthankara

"Bridge-builders", a rare individual who has conquered samsara and leads others to liberation.

Ascetic

The practice of severe self-discipline through abstaining from all indulgence.

Moksha

Total liberation.

Kevala

Pure consciousness while you are still alive.

Ahimsa

Non-violence to all living things.

Jiva

The soul, the immortal essence.

Ajiva

Not the soul, represents matter like the body, considered evil/bad.

Samsara

Rebirth and re-death.

Karma

Particles that are attracted to the jiva by the actions of the jiva; it is a pollution to the jiva.

The majority

Non-ascetic Jains, live in society, work, take three vows.

The minority

Monks, strict ascetics who take all the vows.

Agamas

Jain scripture/holy writings.

Svetambara

"White-clad", more liberal in interpreting Mahavira, women are accepted.

Digambara

"Sky-clad", conservative, naked, women are the greatest temptation and cannot attain moksha.

Paryushana

Main holiday in which Jains are encouraged to fast and live as monks.

Diwali

Celebrates the liberation of Mahavira.
