KINESIOLOGY
The study of human movement & physical activity
ORIGINS & USE OF THE TERM PHYSICAL LITERACY
1880s: Term started being used in the USA
1918-1990S: Ppl worried active lifestyles were under threat
2001: Margaret Whitehead’s original paper helped develop the modern concept of PL
WHY WE NEED TO ENHANCE THE CONCEPT OF PL?
We are embodied beings —> mind + body are connected
We forgot the importance of movement development in early childhood
People were drifting away from physical activity across the lifespan
Physical education focused too much on high performance
DEFINING PL
Motivation & Confidence —> Affective
Physical Competence —> Physical
Knowledge & Understanding —> Cognitive
KEY FEATURES OF PL
Inclusive
Lifelong
Not just for talented people
Not just a means to another goal
PL IS NOT THE SAME AS
Physical activity (PA = the action you do —> PL = how you think, feel, move)
Physical education (PE = program/tool used to teach —> PL = internal capability)
Physical fitness (PF = outcome/measurement of body performance —> PL = ability/skill to move)
3 PHILOSOPHICAL TENETS OF PL
Monism
Existentialism
Phenomenology
MONISM
The idea that our mind + body are connected as one
Movement affects how we think, feel, and learn, and vice versa.
EXISTENTIALISM
The idea that we can create ourselves and make our own choices
Movement experiences are personal (when you think of the beach = your actions could be swimming, surfing, fishing…)
PHENOMENOLOGY
The idea that everyone experiences the world differently
Experience in movement matters
