Real Number
Any number that can be found on the number line, representing the union of rational numbers (Q) and irrational numbers.
Commutative Property
The property stating that the order of terms does not affect the result: a+b=b+a for addition and a×b=b×a for multiplication.
Associative Property
The property stating that the grouping of terms does not affect the result: (a+b)+c=a+(b+c) for addition and (a×b)×c=a×(b×c) for multiplication.
Distributive Property
The property linking multiplication and addition: a×(b+c)=a×b+a×c.
Additive Identity
The number 0, which satisfies the condition a+0=a for any real number a.
Multiplicative Identity
The number 1, which satisfies the condition a×1=a for any real number a.
Additive Inverse
For any real number a, the number −a such that a+(−a)=0.
Multiplicative Inverse
For any non-zero real number a=0, the reciprocal a1 such that a×a1=1.
Closure Property
The property stating that the sum or product of any two real numbers is always a real number (a+b∈R, a×b∈R).
Zero Property of Multiplication
The property stating that multiplying any real number by 0 results in 0 (a×0=0).
Trichotomy Property
For any two real numbers a and b, exactly one of the following relations is true: a<b, a=b, or a>b.
Absolute Value
The distance of a real number a from 0 on the number line, defined piecewise as a if a≥0 and −a if a<0.

The representation of a positive number x in the form x=a×10n, where 1≤a<10 and n is an integer.
Principal nth Root
For a positive integer n, the number b such that na=b means bn=a, with the requirement that a≥0 and b≥0 if n is even.
Rational Exponent
An exponent of the form nm in lowest terms (n>0), defined such that am/n=(na)m=nam.
Variable
A letter that represents any number from a given set of numbers.
Algebraic Expression
A mathematical phrase formed by combining variables and real numbers using operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, powers, and roots.
