Modulus of elasticity
A material property that measures a substance's resistance to non-permanent, or elastic, deformation when a force is applied
Yield strength
the amount of stress a material can endure before it begins to deform permanently
Tensile Strength
the maximum pulling or stretching stress a material can withstand before it breaks or permanently deforms
Ductility
A material's ability to undergo significant plastic (permanent) deformation under tensile stress
Resilience
a material's ability to absorb energy when it deforms elastically and then release that energy completely when the load is removed
Toughness
a material's ability to absorb energy and plastic-ally deform (bend or stretch permanently) without fracturing
How does a tensile tester machine work?
It works by gripping a specimen of a known cross-section and then pulling it apart at a predetermined speed until failure.
What is HRC?
a standard metric in material science used to measure the hardness of hard metals. (150kg)
What is HRB?
a widely used scale in material science to measure the indentation hardness of soft- to medium-strength materials. (100kg)
Strain
a dimensionless measure of the relative deformation or change in shape and size that a material undergoes when subjected to an external force, load, or thermal change
How does a hardness tester work?
measures a material's resistance to permanent deformation, scratching, or local indentation when a standardized force is applied through a specific tip (indenter)
