Combining Form
A word root with the combining vowel attached, separated by a slash.
Combining Vowel Guideline 1
When connecting a word root and a suffix, a combining vowel is used if the suffix does not begin with a vowel.
Combining Vowel Guideline 2
When connecting a word root and a suffix, a combining vowel is usually not used if the suffix begins with a vowel.
Combining Vowel Guideline 3
When connecting two word roots, a combining vowel is usually used even if vowels are present at the junction.
Combining Vowel Guideline 4
When connecting a prefix and a word root, a combining vowel is not used.
Analyzing Medical Terms
The procedure of dividing a medical term into word parts with slashes, labeling each word part, and underlining and labeling each combining form.
Defining Medical Terms
The procedure of applying the meaning of each word part contained in a term, starting with the suffix and then moving to the beginning of the term.
Building Medical Terms
The procedure of placing word parts together to form a term when given its definition, starting from the suffix and adding combining vowels as needed.
