Cultural model as static

Cultural models are critiqued static representation of culture

cultures changes w time

does not take into account subcultures and their evolving nature —- nor the changes w globalization

and also, ignores the contextual factors like political systems

promoting stereotypes

national cultural models encourage stereotyping of someone from a particular culture (like that they possess a certain trait)

this b/c they are looking at everything broadly not for each individual community

subcultures

focuses on national boundaries to define and compare cultures — ignores cultures across boundaries, communities, and borders

diversifying experiences and values

transnational cultures

individuals who feel a stronger sense of belonging with a fellow subculture member in other countries than those who are not part of their culture

polyculturalism

alternative way to understand cultures - recognize that individuals often navigate multiple cultural influences due to global mobility, media consumption, and media interactions

—challenges the idea of homogenous national cultures bc you can interact with multitudes of cultures outside of your own

culturalism

a categorical conception in which individuals are shaped by one primary culture and the world’s cultural traditions are separate and independent
