What are the three aspects used to classify children's play?

  1. Concrete vs. Symbolic: Playing with an object for its intended use (concrete) vs. using an object to represent something else (symbolic/pretend).

  2. Parallel vs. Social: Playing alongside others with little direct interaction (parallel) vs. interacting, cooperating, and sharing goals with others (social).

  3. Active vs. Passive: Involving physical body movement/sports (active) vs. quiet, calm play or interactions (passive).
