What is a taxon?
what is the order of taxa?
Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species
What is binomial nomenclature?
Two word classification system (Genus, Species)
What was Linnaeus's first idea of species
the idea that organisms of a species are morphologically similar to each other
What is the biological species concept?
a species is a group of organisms whose members have the potential to produce viable, fertile offspring
What is a karyotype?
the number and nature of chromosomes in an organism found by a karyogram
What is a karyogram?
a photograph or diagram in which the chromosomes of an organism are shown in homologous pairs of decreasing length
How are homologous pairs sorted?
-Size
-Banding pattern
-Centromere position
What is satellite DNA?
short repeated DNA segments, generally found in the non coding regions of the chromosome- specifically the centromere and telomeres
What are telomeres?
DNA at the ends of the chromosomes that are made up of non-coding DNA
What is whole genome sequencing?
Whole genome sequences determines the order of the bases in an organism's genome, allowing for the comparing of genomes across species
What is the current use of genome sequencing?
to compare genomes and further understand evolutionary relationships between species
What is a future use of genome sequencing?
personalised medicine (diagnostics and treatment)
