pluripotent
multi potential. Used in the context of stem cells (undifferentiated mesenchymal cells)
Prothrombin
plasma protein produced by the liver that is involved in blood clotting
Fibrinogen
Plasma protein
thrombus
blood clot
thrombosis
unwanted clotting. Clotting in an unbroken blood vessel
embolus
a circulating blood clot
infarction
tissue killed as a result of loos blood supply
embolism
embolus that becomes lodged in a vessel and cuts off circulation
Leukocytes
combat inflammation and infection
Neutrophils
most common leukocytes; they secrete lysozyme
Monocytes
phagocytize bacteria and any dead cells or cellular debris. After they leave the blood and enter tissues, they increase in size and are called macrophages
Eosinophils
combat irritants, such as pollen or cat hair, that cause allergies. They produce antihistamines
Basophils
heparin (an anticoagulant), histamine (an inflammatory substance), and serotonin (a vasoconstrictor) into tissues.
Lymphocytes
production of antibodies and play a crucial role in the body’s immune response. They are the smallest of the leukocytes. Two types: B lymphocytes and T lymphocytes
Thrombocytes (platelets)
They prevent fluid loss when blood vessels are damaged by initiating a chain of reactions that result in blood clotting.
erythrocytes
combine with oxygen in the lungs and to transport it to the various tissues of the body. It then combines with carbon dioxide in tissues and transports it to the lungs for expulsion from the body.
globin
protein in hemoglobin
heme
pigment in hemoglobin
