Traumatic Brain Injury, resulting from any injury due to a traumatic event.

Pre-morbid cognitive functioning

The level of cognitive ability a person had before the injury or damage.

Intracranial pressure

Pressure within the skull which can lead to secondary damage in the brain.

Coup-countercoup injury

Injury that occurs at the site of impact (coup) and on the opposite side (countercoup) of the brain.

GCS (Glasgow Coma Scale)

A scale used to assess the consciousness of a patient based on eye, verbal, and motor responses.

Coma

A state of prolonged unconsciousness where a patient cannot be awakened.

Vegetative state

A state where the patient may have sleep-wake cycles, but no awareness of self or environment.

Lability

The inability to control emotional responses, often leading to unpredictable mood swings.

Confabulation

A memory error where a patient may create false memories or information, often without intending to deceive.

Decerebrate posture

A posture indicating severe brain damage where limbs are extended and internal rotation occurs.

Decorticate posture

A posture indicating damage to the brain where arms are flexed, and legs are extended.

Heterotrophic ossification

Abnormal bone growth in non-skeletal tissues, often leading to complications post injury.

Rancho Los Amigos Scale

A scale used to measure cognitive recovery from brain injury, with levels ranging from I (no response) to VIII (purposeful and appropriate behavior).
