Define “physical property”
A characteristic of a pure substance that can be observed without changing into another substance.
Give six examples of physical properties of matter
Melting point, boiling point, conductivity, color change, odor change, luster.
Define chemical properties
Characteristics that describe the ability of a substance to become something else.
Give two examples of chemical properties of matter
Reactivity, flammability, and rusting.
What is mass?
The amount of matter that takes up an object.
What is weight?
The measurement of the gravitational pull felt by the mass.
What is volume?
The “space” that matter occupies.
What is density?
How much mass is in a given volume.
What is the formula for density?
Density= mass / volume
What is a physical change?
A physical change changes the form or appearance but does not make it into another substance.
What is a chemical change?
A chemical change produces a new substance chemically.
What are the five signs of a Chemical Reaction?
Precipitate, color change, change in temperature, gas productions (bubbles), and changes in odor.
Thermal energy moves from matter to matter.
Warmer, cooler.
What is the Law of the Conservation of Mass?
States that matter cannot be created or destroyed in any chemical or physical changes.
