What is a chemical solution?
A homogeneous mixture of two or more substances mixed in a uniform composition.
What are the two components of a chemical solution?
Solute (dissolves in the solution) and Solvent (dissolves the solute).
What factors affect solubility?
Temperature, pressure, and polarity.
How does temperature affect gas solubility?
Gasses are more soluble when it is colder; most dissolved oxygen occurs at lower temperatures.
What is an aqueous solution?
A solution where the solvent is water.
What are saturated solutions?
Solutions containing the maximum amount of solute that can dissolve at a given temperature.
What characterizes supersaturated solutions?
Solutions containing more solute than the maximum that can dissolve at a given temperature, typically unstable.
What is the Tyndall effect?
The scattering of light by particles in a colloid, demonstrating that colloids have larger particles than solutions.
What is the difference between a colloid and a suspension?
Colloids have particles that do not settle out and are smaller than in suspensions, which have larger particles that settle over time.
What are electrolytes?
Substances like plain old salt that yield ions and conduct electricity when dissolved in water.
What common examples undergo ionization in water?
Salts, acids, and bases.
What are alloys?
Solid solutions made from two or more metals.
How does stirring affect the rate of solution?
Stirring increases the rate at which the solute comes in contact with the solvent.
What is the difference between unsaturated and saturated solutions?
Unsaturated solutions contain less solute than the maximum that can dissolve, while saturated solutions contain the maximum amount.
How does surface area affect the rate of solution?
Larger surface area increases the rate of solution.
