What is the definition of DFM?
a facet of design that focuses on ease of
manufacturing individual components and
assembling the collective that forms the complete product
what are the objectives of DFM?
estimate manufacturing coast
reduce cost of components
reduce cost of assembly
reduce the cost of supporting production
assembly line, fixture, tools/dies etc
improve quality of product
what are the characteristics of DFM?
requires that manufacturing is considered early in the design cycle
minimizes manufacturing operations, components, and opportunities for manufacturing error
often requires integration between engineering and manufacturing teams
focuses on coast, quality, and accuracy of manufacturing over pure form/function
should be applied with balance when in conflict with other design considerations
what are the benefits of DFM?
lower COGS, higher profit
encourages standardization and modularity
reoccurring “design language” recognized by customer, yields brand loyalty
more inter- company compatibility (ex: apple ecosystem)
overall time to market decreased
better serviceability (sometimes)
what are the 10 guidelines of DFM?
reduce the total numbers of parts
develop a modular design
use of standard components
design parts to be multifunctional
design multi-use parts
design for ease of fabrication
avoid separate fasteners
minimize assembly approach directions
maximize compliance
minimize handling
observing the DFM guideline of designing modular parts means that the end customer will be able to use your product interchangeably with other similar products
true or false
false
Describe the difference between
a) designing multifunctional parts
b) designing multi-use parts
a) when you design for multifunctional you combine two separate functions into one feature
b) multi-use parts are the same part just used in different places across the design, they perform the same function
how can you attach two components together in a way that does not require fasteners like screws or bolts?
snaps, glue, welding, etc.
what kind of features can be added to parts to make assembly go faster?
add chamfers to holes to make the parts go in easier
make it obvious where things connect aka poka-yoke
