Types of Blood vessels
Arteries: blood vessels that carry oxygenated blood away from the heart
thick elastic walls made of smooth muscle and connective tissue, thick tunica media, smaller lumen
lots of pressure
branch into smaller vessels called arterioles
Capillaries: smallest and thinnest bv’s that connect arteries and veins
walls made of single layer of endothelial cells
facilitate exhange of gases, nutrients and waste products btwn blood and surrounding tissues
Veins: bv’s that carry blood back to the heart
thinner walls, thinner tunica media, have valves, larger lumen
less pressure
branch into larger vessels and become the vena cava’s
Celiac Trunk (artery)
Superior branch off of the abdominal aorta
branches into the left gastric artery, left splenic, and left common hepatic artery
organs that it supplies: stomach, spleen, liver, parts of pancreas, and duodenum

Mesenteric Arteries (artery)
Superior:
arises from abominal aorta, inch inferior to celiac trunk
supplies pancreas, duodenum, small intestine, and large portion of large intestine
Inferior:
arises from inferior portion of abdominal aorta
supplies sections of colon and rectum

Hepatic Portal (vein)
collects blood from digestive viscera, spleen and pancreas===delivers to liver
receives blood from splenic vein, superior mesenteric vein, gastric vein, and inferior mesenteric

Medial cubital (vein)
Where blood is drawn
branches into: cephalic and basilic vein
