Plumbing Permit Expiration
The invalidation of a permit if work has not commenced within 1 year from issuance or if work is suspended or abandoned for 120 days.

Plumbing Inspection Request Lead Time
The legal requirement that every written request for plumbing inspection must be filed at least 3 working days before the intended inspection date.
Principle No. 1 (Water Supply)
The principle stating that all premises intended for human habitation must be provided with a supply of pure and wholesome water, safe from backflow or back-siphonage.
Principle No. 6 (Dwelling Sanitation)
The rule requiring each family dwelling unit abutting a sewer or private sewage system to have at least 1 water closet, 1 kitchen sink, a lavatory, and a bathtub or shower.
Principle No. 10 (Trap Seal)
The mandate that each fixture directly connected to the drainage system shall be equipped with a water-sealed trap.

The rule requiring buildings without access to a public sewer to dispose of sewage through an accepted treatment method, such as a septic tank.

The requirement that sewage deleterious to surface or subsurface waters must be rendered innocuous through acceptable treatment before discharge.

Black, oval-shaped plastic piping denoted by outside diameter (O.D.), used for water service connections from main to meter.
Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) Color Coding
Plumbing color standard where blue PVC is used for potable water, while gray, orange, or brown PVC is used for drain pipes made with toxic components.
Oakum
Hemp or old hemp rope soaked in oil or tar used as packing material to make caulked pipe joints waterproof.
Slip Joint
An adjustable tubing connection consisting of a compression nut, a friction ring, and a compression washer.
SV Cast Iron Pipe
Service grade cast iron soil pipe generally used for above-ground building installations.
XV Cast Iron Pipe
Extra duty cast iron soil pipe designed specifically for underground installations.

Cast Iron Pipe Hub Configurations
Types of cast iron pipes including single hub (for lengths over 150 cm), double hub (for cut pieces under 150 cm), standard, and hubless.

Caulked Joint Lead Depth
The required depth of molten pig lead poured into a hub-and-spigot cast iron joint, specified as 25.4 mm.

A soldered joint used on lead pipes or between lead and brass/copper pipe, requiring a 19 mm thick exposed surface on each side of the joint.
Brass Pipe Composition
An expensive piping material composed of an alloy of 15% zinc and 85% copper.
Type K Copper Tube
The heaviest wall thickness copper plumbing tube, color-coded green, suitable for underground installations.
Type L Copper Tube
Medium wall thickness copper plumbing tube, color-coded blue, commonly used for residential water supply lines and radiant heating.
Type M Copper Tube
The thinnest rigid copper plumbing tube, color-coded red, used for above-ground interior water lines or protected outdoor piping.
DWV Copper Tube
Copper tubing color-coded yellow, designed specifically for above-ground and underground drainage, waste, and vent lines.
