Compact

Forms the hard outer layer or shell of all bones and makes up the bulk of the shaft (diaphysis) of long bones.

Spongy

Fills the inner layer of most bones and is heavily concentrated at the expanded ends (epiphyses) of long bones, as well as in short, flat, and irregular bones like vertebrae.

Long bones

Longer than they are wide; cylindrical shaft called diaphysis; upper limbs (arms, forearms, palms, and fingers) and lower limbs (thigh, leg, sole of foot, and toes).

Short bones

About equal in length and width; carpal (wrist) and tarsal (foot) bones; sesamoid bones (small, sesame seed-shaped) are along tendons of some muscles, like the patella (kneecap).

Flat bones

Have flat, thin surfaces (may be curved); roof of skull, the scapulae (should blades), sternum (breastbone), and the ribs.

Irregular bones

Elaborate/complex shapes that do not fit the other classifications; vertebrae, ossa coxae (hip bones); several skull bones (ethmoid, sphenoid, maxillae, temporal).
