Scientific Method
A process used to answer questions about the world; there isn’t just one method—there are several versions; all start with identifying a problem from observations.
Observation
Information gathered about the world around us, used to identify problems and guide questions.
Problem/Question
The question to be answered, identified from observations and stated as a question.
Hypothesis
An educated guess or possible answer to a question; a testable statement about what will happen.
Data
Information collected during an experiment; organized into a data table and displayed as a graph.
Data Table
A structured arrangement for organizing data in rows and columns.
Graph
A visual representation of data.
Experiment
A procedure to test the hypothesis; plan, perform, and record results.
Research
Reading, seeking advice, and making observations about the problem.
Independent Variable
The variable that is tested or deliberately changed by the scientist.
Conclusion
A final analysis of data; drawing conclusions and summarizing findings.
