What is the pancreas mostly composed of?
Exocrine glands (99%), with a bit of endocrine cells (1%)
Islets of Langerhans
Endocrine cells in pancreas
What cells are in islets of Langerhans?
Alpha cells, beta cells, delta cells, PP cells
Alpha cells
Produce glucagon, stimulating hepatocytes and beta cells to make insulin through paracrine communication
Beta cells
Produce insulin, stimulating adipocytes and skeletal muscle myocytes, inhibits alpha cells
Delta cells
Produce somatostatin, inhibiting alpha and beta cells
PP cells
Produce pancreatic polypeptide, which stimulates exocrine pancreatic acinar cells
Causes of T1DM
Decreased plasma insulin due to autoimmunity to pancreatic beta cells
