IBS - BODY POSITIONS / TERMS OF DIRECTION

What is the anatomical standard position?

• all health professionals used to describe the body

• standard positon of reference

How does the anatomical standard position look like?

• subject stands erect (straight)

• facing observer head level

• eyes facing forward

• lower limbs are parallel

• fleet flat and directed forward

• upper limbs are at the sides and palms are facing forwards

What is a supine body position?

• body is lying face up

What is a prone body position? (HINT: خروف)

• body is lying facedown

what is a left lateral recumbent and right lateral recumbent body position?

• body lying on either left or right side

TERMS OF DIRECTION

→ towards the head, upper part of structure.

Superior (cephalic/cranial)

→ away from head, lower part of structure

Inferior (caudal)

→ nearer to or at the front of body

Anterior (ventral)

→ nearer to or at the back of body

Posterior (dorsal)

→ nearer to the midline (divides the body into equal right and left sides)

Medial

→ farther from the midline

Lateral

→ between two structures

Intermediate

→ on the same side of the body as another structure

Ipsilateral

→ on the opposite side of the body from another structure

Contralateral

→ nearer to the origination of a structure

Proximal

→ farther from the origination of a structure

Distal

→ toward or on the surface of the body

Superficial (external)

→ away from the surface of the body

Deep (Internal)
