Paragraph

A sequence of sentences all related to a single topic.

5-6 Sentence Paragraph Model

A paragraph structure consisting of 1 topic, 1 claim (main idea), 3 supporting evidences, and 1 conclusion.

Step 1: Brainstorm

The first step in writing a cohesive paragraph where the writer determines paragraph composition by identifying the topic, deciding on a claim, and listing evidences.

Topic

The subject that a writer wants to write about.

Claim

A statement that asserts a specific idea, opinion, or argument that the writer intends to prove or support.

Evidences

Facts, examples, statistics, quotes, or other data that support and validate the claim or main idea presented in the paragraph.

Step 2: Write your paragraph

The second step in writing a cohesive paragraph using a pattern of Sentence 1 (topic), Sentence 2 (claim), Sentences 3–5 (evidences), and the last sentence (conclusion).

Essay

A text composed of 3 or more paragraphs with an introduction, body, and conclusion.
