What is Geostrophic Flow/Wind?
An upper air wind that blows parallel to the isobars as a result of the balance between the Pressure Gradient Force and the Coriolis Force. It occurs above 600m where friction is minimal.
Why does geostrophic wind blow parallel to the isobars?
Because the PGF (pushing air from high to low) and the Coriolis Force (deflecting it sideways) balance each other out exactly — the air ends up moving parallel to the isobars rather than crossing them.
Why does surface wind NOT blow perfectly parallel to isobars?
Because near the surface, friction between the air and the Earth's surface slows the wind, reducing the Coriolis effect. This causes surface winds to blow diagonally across isobars toward low pressure.
