Royal period (1752-1783)
period of time that Georgia was under the authority of the King of England.
Royal colony
a colony under the control of the monarch of England.
Three Reasons for Ga`s Settlement
Philanthropy-giving money or other help to improve the quality of life; charity. Economics-money; British hoped that GA would be able to produce resources. Defense-protecting other British colonies from the Spanish.

economic policy where a country exports more than it imports; colonies are expected to supply the natural resources.

a plant used to produce a blue dye.
Musgrove, Mary (1700-1763)
Creek Indian women who served as a translator between Oglethorpe and Tomochichi.
Oglethorpe, James (1696-1785)
one of the 21 trustees who established GA; only trustee who traveled to the colony; served as an unofficial military and governmental leader of the colony.
Tomochichi
chief of the Yamacraw Indians; became friends with Oglethorpe and allowed him to establish the colony of Georgia on Yamacraw territory.
Buffer Colony
colony was to serve as a defense buffer (protective barrier) between Spanish Florida and British South Carolina.
Malcontents
group of colonists who complained about the Trustees rules for the colony.
Salzburgers
a religious group from Austria who came because of religious persecution; established Ebenezer; very successful colonists.
Highland Scots
from Scotland; brought by Oglethorpe because they were very good soldiers; founded the town of Darien.
Silk Industry
Colonists planted mulberry trees to produce silkworms; encouraged by the trustees to support merchantilism; was not very successful.
