Electrical Circuit
A closed loop that allows electricity to flow through basic components including a power source, conductors, and a load.
Power Source
A circuit component, such as a battery, that provides the electrical energy required for electricity to flow.
Conductors
Wires that connect all components of a circuit together and allow electric current to pass through.
Load
A device within an electrical circuit, such as a light bulb, that consumes electrical power to perform work.
Switch
A component that can open or close a circuit to control the flow of electricity.
Closed Circuit
A complete electrical loop where the switch is closed, allowing current to flow continuously through all components.
Opened Circuit
A circuit with an open switch or interruption, which prevents current from flowing through the components.
Series Circuit
A circuit in which all components are connected end-to-end along a single path, meaning the same current flows through each component and if one component fails, the entire circuit stops working.
Parallel Circuit
A circuit in which components are connected across common points to create multiple pathways, allowing each branch to receive the same voltage and function independently if another component fails.
Circuit Diagram
A two-dimensional visual representation of an electrical circuit that uses standard symbols for physical components and lines for wires.

Circuit Diagram Symbols
Standardized two-dimensional symbols used in circuit diagrams to depict components such as batteries, wires, loads, closed switches, and opened switches.
Coffee Maker (Circuit Type)
A real-world appliance that operates on a series circuit, connecting the power switch, heating element, and indicator light in a single pathway.
Car's Headlights (Circuit Type)
A real-world application wired in parallel, ensuring each headlight receives equal voltage from the battery and operates independently if the other burns out.
Flashlights
A real-world example of a device connected using a series circuit.
Streetlights
A real-world example of a system wired using a parallel circuit.
