who was Wyatt inspired by
Francesco Petrarca who was the most famous Italian sonnet writer of the time and who Wyatt was emulating.
What job did Wyatt have
a knight at the court in Henry the 8th reign.
who was Wyatt rumoured to have a relationship with
Anne Boleyn who was King Henry’s 2nd wife but she was beheaded at the tower of London for being accused of having an affair and for not having a son.
how does the painting ‘The hunt ins the forest’ by Paulo Uccello relate to the poem
a painting where royalty are hunting deer however there aren’t any deer in the painting which is a metaphor for love always being like a chase and hunt but not being able to see what you are hunting, chasing off into the dark.
“Sithens in a net I seek to hold the wind”
central metaphor
the wind is an elemental force not just of nature, that you cant stop
ironic as its impossible to catch the wind with a net
It's tantalising, exhausting and utterly pointless because the wind is of higher power. someone of lower level trying to capture something of the universe .
that has allusions to Anne as she is of higher level than the speaker being married to the king who was appointed by God.
“Draw from the deer, but as she fleeth afore”
the love in intoxicating him and is like a drug which is damaging him, yet he still chases for that ‘buzz’
allusions to the Greek King Tantalus because he is being tantalised because the ‘hind’ (women) hes hunting is elusive, unattainable and belongs to a more powerful figure.
“Noli me tangere, for Caesar’s I am”
“noil me tangere” (touch me not) was said by Jesus in the New testement
“for Caesar’s I am” - has Biblical allusions
this is a sign of protest that him and Anne can be together in heaven- Henry can claim her as a property in mortal life but cannot contain the wind.
“and wild for to hold, though I seem tame”
thomas wyyat has hope to be a wild unreachable thing but in fact she is collared and chained by Henry and she dies by his hand.
It's a protest that Henry can own the body but not the mind and she is of the wind which Henry can never capture- extending the metaphor of the wind.
whats the structure of whoso list to hunt, i know where is an hind
started off in iambic pentameter but switches to trochee at “fainting I follow”
