Two way Table
lists two categorical variables who have been paired up in some way

joint relative frequency
ratio of the number of times a specific combination of outcomes (a single cell) occurs to the total number of observations
amount divided by table total
marginal relative frequency
ratio of the total number of occurrences for a single variable total to the total number of observations
Row or column total divided by table total
conditional relative frequency
The proportion or percentage of individuals in a specific category of one variable who fall into a particular category of another variable.
total divided by row or column total
Sample Space
The set of all possible outcomes in a probability experiment.
Event
A subset of a sample space representing one or more possible outcomes of a probability experiment.
P(A)
The probability of event A occurring in a probability experiment.
Range of probabilities
from 0 to 1, where 0 indicates impossibility and 1 indicates certainty.
Sum of probabilities
The total probability of all possible outcomes in a probability experiment, which equals 1.
Theoretical Probability
the number of favorable outcomes divided by the total number of possible outcomes. What should happen given the sample space.
empirical probability
the ratio of the number of times an event occurs to the total number of trials or observations. What actually happens in a simulation or experiment.
Law of large numbers
As an experiment is repeated over more and more trials, the empirical (observed) probability gets closer and closer to the true theoretical probability.
