1/8
Vocabulary flashcards covering the components, structure, protein subunits, and functions of the cytoskeleton.
Cytoskeleton
Provides structure and support to the cell and facilitates cellular transport.
Microtubules
The largest cytoskeletal element, made of the protein subunit tubulin.
Tubulin
The protein subunit that composes microtubules.

9+2 arrangement
Microtubule organization found in flagella and cilia consisting of 9 pairs of microtubules arranged in a ring, with 2 microtubules in the middle.
Centrioles
Organelles featuring a 9+0 microtubule arrangement (9 pairs and none in the middle) that help separate chromosomes during cell division.
9+0 arrangement
The microtubule structure of centrioles characterized by 9 pairs arranged in a ring and none in the middle.
Microfilaments
The thinnest cytoskeletal elements, composed of the protein actin and involved in cytokinesis of animal cells.
Actin
The protein that makes up microfilaments.
Intermediate filaments
The most stable cytoskeletal elements, present only in animal cells of certain tissues, which anchor organelles and provide mechanical strength.
