Remember where god says I am

-Moses is not convinced that he is the right man for the job and raises several objections

God patiently answers each objection and reassures moses and god promises him, "i will be with you" (Ex: 3:12)

Moses is still doubtful and asks god rather pointedly what his name is

To this question god answers, "I am who I am" (Ex3:14)

Book of joshua has a story and theres something that pushes the story along- elements of the story that r essential

-as gen. thru deutornomy ended, we were left with 2 major strands of the plot that will push the story along into the book of Joshua

There are two strands:

-the first is the promise will be fulfilled to give Israelites a land of blessing (this will happen in the book of Joshua); the Israelites will cross the Jordan river and conquer the land of Canaan. they will then divide the land among the 12 tribes and settle down to enjoy the blessings of god in this promised land. it will become a place of blessing, empowered and sanctified by the presence of god

-The second plot strand comes from the commandments and from deuteronomy in particular - it presents the terms by which Israel could live in the promised land with god and presents the question of will the Israelites obey deutronemy and be blessed

Remember the parallels crossing between crossing the jordan and at the red sea

-There r common elements in both stories

-Joshua 3-6 describes the spectacular victory that god gives joshua and the israelites over the strong fortress city of jericho. First, god stops up the Jordan river so the Israelites can cross over the river on dry ground, even in the flood stage. This parallels the crossing of the red sea back in exodus. Just as god parted the red sea to deliver the israelites from slavery, so he now parts the jordan river to lead them to a new life of blessing in the promised land. this parallels the NT picture of salvation for us- being delivered from sin and being led to a new life of blessing in the lord.

Cycle israel goes thru in judges:

-Judges 2:6-23 describes the terrible cycle that ensues for israel:

-when the Israelite turn to other gods, god removes his protection and power from them and foreign raiders or invaders overrun Israel and oppress them; then god raises up a delivery who rescues Israel from their oppressors (judges); however soon after the rescue Israel will repeatedly plunge. back into idolatry even worse then before so god ones again removes his powerful protection, another enemy invades and the cycle repeats.

-the image:

Israel turns away from god to idols-> god hands Israel over to oppressors-> Israel suffers under foreign domination-> god raises up a "judge" to deliver Israel

How does book of judges/cycle end

-this is the pattern that runs throughout the book although it is not just cyclical. Israel spins around on their merry go round of disobedience, things get worse, then they reach the bottom with a crash; judges 1-2 presents the overview of the cycle and the particulars of the downward spiral are told thru the stories of several judges in 3-16

-Throughout the book of judges, the Israelites have spiraled down and down morally and theologically. Here at the end the israelites hit the bottom with a spectacular and dramatic crash and the israelites end up fighting each other.
