Ritalin
A stimulant medication that contains methylphenidate as its active ingredient.
Agonistic properties of Ritalin
Ritalin increases neurotransmitter levels in the synapse by blocking the reuptake of dopamine (DA) and norepinephrine (NE) and slightly increasing their release.
Sustained Release (SR)
A form of Ritalin (Concerta) that includes methylphenidate and dissolves slower for prolonged effects.
Extended Release (XR)
A form of Ritalin (Focalin) that contains dexmethylphenidate and is more potent, requiring smaller doses than standard Ritalin.
Adderall
A racemic amphetamine commonly prescribed for ADHD, composed of both amphetamine and dextroamphetamine.
Vyvanse
A long-lasting ADHD medication containing lisdexamfetamine, which has a lower potential for abuse.
Dexedrine
A medication containing dextroamphetamine that is chemically similar to Adderall.
Strattera
A non-stimulant drug that acts as a norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor.
Common side effects of Ritalin
Stunted growth, appetite reduction, rebound hyperactivity, headaches, irritability in the GI tract, sleep problems, and minor BP increases.
Common side effects of Adderall
Tachycardia (100+ BPM), increased blood pressure, enhanced psychomotor activity, gastrointestinal upset, and weight loss.
Risks of using ADHD drugs without a diagnosis
Potential for cognitive impairment, overstimulation, withdrawal symptoms, and dependency.
Cognitive performance impacts with stimulant usage
Excessive arousal and overstimulation can lead to declines in cognitive performance.
