Biosecurity
On farms, as defined by the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH), are a set of management and physical measures designed to reduce the risk of introduction, establishment and spread of animal diseases, infections or infestations to, from and within an animal population.
Halter (sheep/goat)
Tool used to assist with handling of goats/sheep especially with walking or leading (middle part on muzzle)

Paint Brand Iron and Paint
Temporary identification technique used to mark animals

Scrapie tag
Used to show if animal has disease, has USDA official seal, helps tracability

Tattoo Pliers/Numbers
Permanent identification tool used to ID animal

Hoof trimmers/foot-rot sheers
Used to trim feet and prevent foot rot, from hoof should be 55 degree angle, back 50 degree angle, first clean out debris and mud, then trip toe, heal, sole, between

Elastrator and Elastrator bands
Used for tail docking (tail removal) and castration technique

Small Burdizzo
Bloodless castrating tool, The spermatic cord and blood supply is crushed / crimped through the scrotum. No incision is made

Emasculator
A tool used to castrate males. An incision must be made to expose the testicles. This cuts and crimps the cord and removes the testicles

Crook (neck)
Used to assist catching a sheep by the neck, an extension of your arm

Crook (leg)
Used to help catch sheep as an extension of your arm, catching the sheep by the leg.

Prolapse Retainer or Prolapse Spoon
Used to help keep the vaginal prolapse inside of the sheep. They must have a fleece to tie the ends to. This does not work on hair sheep / goats or those that are shorn.

Lamb/kid Puller
Used to help during parturition to pull the offspring out of the birth canal.

Balling G*n small
Used to help get a bolus over the sheep’s tongue and down their throat

Bolus Tongs
Used to help administer a bolus orally to the sheep

Comb/Cutter blades for sheers
The comb separates the wool fibers and the cutter cuts the wool fibers that pass through the comb. Cutter is the top blade. Comb is the bottom blade.

Marking Harness / Marking Harness Crayon
Used to track when the Ram / Buck mounted the female. An aid in breeding record tracking.

Lamb Tube
Used to tube feed a lamb / kid liquid when they are not doing well. Note it consists of red rubber catheter connected to a 60 cc catheter tip syringe.

Chair/Cradle
To help assist with handling the sheep when trimming feet or giving Intramammary injections, stabilizes sheep and allows you access easier

FootBath
Allows treatment to come into contact with the hoof for a certain amount of time to kill bacteria without causing damage to the hoof.

Naval Dip Cup
Filled with iodine to dip navel after being clipped to prevent bacteria from entering through the navel

Gambrel Restrainer
Used for restraining sheep and goat for foot trimming and medication administration

Weaning Ring
Put on nose, stop cow from weaning

Bar Vac CDT – Clostridium Perfringens Type C&D Tetanus Toxoid
Vaccine, goats/ sheep inject 2ml subcut repeat in 21-28 days and once annually, cow inject 5ml subcutaneous repeat in 21-28 days and once annually, do not vax within 21 days before slaughter
Cydectin for Sheep – Oral drench for sheep (wormers)
Moxidectin, 1 ml per 11 lb, 0.2mg per 2.2lbs, put into mouth using standard drenching equipment, cannot be slaughtered within 7 days
Ivomac Drench for sheep
Ivermectin, standard drenching, orally, 3.0 mL (2.4mg) per 26lbs

FAMCHA
Scoring system to determine barber pole worm in stomach of goats and sheep, pull down eyelid, 1-2 ok, 3 possible, 4-5 needs deworming
Administer Medicine
Stick needle in medicine (through lid), extract, find jugular vein by feeling with finger, push vein up, administer subcutaneously, discard needle
Draw blood
Find jugular vein, press down with one hand, insert into vein with one hand, slowly pull, apply finger to needle spot for 30-60 seconds
Calculate dosage
Weight x dosage (can also be seen as mL/lb = mL=lb, and flip around to find out)

Flight Zone
Area surrounding animal that, if encroached upon, will cause alarm and escape behavior, it represents the animal’s personal space, and the size of the flight zone is determined by the wildness or tameness of the animal.
Point of Balance
A point perpendicular to the animal's shoulder and it is determined by the animal's wide angle vision. All species of livestock will move forward if the handler stands behind the point of balance. They will back up if the handler stands in front of the point of balance.

Large Burdizzo
Castration device that is a large clamp that is designed to break the blood vessels that lead into the testicles. No incision made

Newberry Castrating Knife
Used to make an incision on each side of the scrotal sack making it so that the cords are showing. Then you can isolate the spermatic cords and cut and crimp the cord with an emasculator

Elastrator and bands (Large)
Bloodless, the band is so tight it cuts the circulation off causing the scrotal sack atrophy and to fall off making the bull a steer. Used on smaller calves

Calicrate Bander and Elastrator Bands
Used for castrating larger bulls. The bands are extra strong and you essentially crank the band down to make it tight around the scrotal sack to cut the circulation off

Emasculator (cow)
Used after making an incision to crush and cut the spermatic cord.

Nose flap
Flat nose ring that has spikes on it to prevent the calves from nursing on their mother. Typically used during the weaning process

Implant
Guns and Dose Cartridges- used to insert the pellet that contains a growth promoter. Some are hormones, some are not! You insert this into the ear of the animal SubQ

Chains that are used to help pull calves.

Used to give boluses to cattle

Frame Score tool
A way to describe the size of the cattle based on their age and height

Dose Gun (Wormer)
Used to measure out the dosage based on weight and give a topical de-wormer.

Dehorner (Barnes / Scoop / Gouge)
Placed over the horn and when you open the handles it cuts through the skin and under the horn

Nose Lead
Attached to the cow’s nose to work as a distraction and can make it easier to hand them.

Paste G*n and Safeguard Tube
Used to give paste orally

Branding Iron (freeze brand)
Used to leave a permanent mark on cattle. Another way to identify beef cattle. Come in hot brands also
